Changes to Alberta Law Libraries (ALL) funding

December 11, 2014

The following message concerns changes to Alberta Law Libraries (ALL) funding:

The Law Society of Alberta (LSA) met on Thursday, December 4th, to discuss their current annual funding commitments to Alberta Law Libraries, referring to their internally produced Task Force Committee review and report, and to vote on what direction to take with regards to the annual grant they award to the libraries. As was announced via their December 9th eBulletin (full text), the LSA will implement a reduced annual award to ALL that will be phased-in over the next three fiscal years.

Shelagh Mikulak Memorial Scholarship in Library Sciences inaugural recipient: Christine Pinkney

December 11, 2014

Christine is a young woman who is passionate about libraries – at the young age of 28, she has already spent 11 years working and volunteering in libraries. Much of that was in the Calgary Public Library.

Christine loves books and libraries; Shelagh loved books and libraries.

Christine started out as a page at Calgary Public Library; Shelagh started out as a page at Calgary Public Library

Christine completed her BA at the University of Calgary in Art and English; Shelagh completed her BA in English at the University of Calgary.

Christine faced a financial challenge to complete her education, including reliance on student loans and scholarships. Shelagh faced a financial challenge to complete her education, including reliance on student loans and scholarships.

Christine is already active a member and volunteer in library associations. Shelagh thrived on her membership and volunteer involvement with library associations and within her chosen profession.

The parallels are uncanny!

What solidified the choice of Christine as the inaugural winner of the Shelagh Mikulak Memorial Scholarship in Library Sciences was when her reference at Calgary Public Library wrote that Christine was an “agent of change”.

Our family endowed the memorial scholarship in Shelagh’s name to create a permanent legacy in her honour. It was her incredible ability to encourage young professionals to pursue a career in librarianship, and then to mentor them, that was the genesis for the scholarship. It was our wish for her spirit to carry on.

It is indeed our family’s distinct honour to present the first Shelagh Mikulak Memorial Scholarship in Library Sciences to Christine Pinkney.

Statistics Canada Beta site

November 13, 2014

Statistics Canada is in the process of redeveloping their website and is looking for feedback.

From their FAQ:

“We are improving our website in response to comments received from our users. While most users are able to navigate the current website and find the information they require, we have identified the need for a more simplified and coherent product line.

Statistics Canada is also changing the way it disseminates information to Canadians to take advantage of evolving technology, increase user satisfaction and improve data retrieval success rates.”

The FAQ notes that the beta site is not to be used as the source for official statistics since the information on it is a snapshot of content from spring 2014.

Feedback can be given on a page by page basis, sent directly to the Statistics Canada web design team or submitted to the discussion forum for participating online.
