Eric Appleby, CEO of Maritime Law Book Ltd. and Colin Lachance, CEO of 9766758 Canada Inc., are pleased to announce the rebirth of a Canadian legal publishing icon.
Founded in 1969 and operating continuously from its Fredericton base, Maritime Law Book broke through with one of many leading innovations in Canadian case law publishing when it launched as an independent regional case law reporter. Over its first decade, MLB added regional reporters in all provinces outside Quebec; it created important national reporter series; and it developed a unique and much-loved topical Key Number System.
No less creative on the digital side, MLB was the first to include digital diskettes of its reported case law in the cover of its print reporters; it was the first (in 1997!) to transition to the world wide web as its digital platform; and it was the first commercial provider to make a substantial body of unedited case law available online at no charge through its Raw Law service.
Under the new ownership of 9766758 Canada Inc., and continuing to operate proudly as “Maritime Law Book”, MLB is set to once again lead a new revolution in case law access and legal research.
The reborn MLB will shortly re-launch with a world-class legal information processing engine that leverages cutting edge natural language process technology to make research easier and more efficient.
“The pace of technological advancement is accelerating, and we want to bring the benefits of that advancement to legal researchers,” says Colin Lachance. “In addition to smarter search, we will provide high demand tools like visualizations that allow you to more quickly zero in on the cases you need, and we will deliver personalized research trails that help you train our system to learn what’s important to you.”
The acquisition is effective as of November 1, 2016. The parties are working closely to support the interests of current online Maritime Law Book customers. The existing platform will remain in operation at www.mlb.nb.ca throughout November and until the new platform is launched.
