Research Specialist (Full-Time)

Reports To:
Director, Information Management

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of the Director, Information Management the role provides support to the various areas of the Library including research and knowledge gathering. The position is responsible for learning and research assistance and liaison services to support the firm's users.

In accordance with the Management Policies of Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP, the Research Specialist has the responsibility to complete the following duties:

  • Conduct research using commercial databases and legal research application;
  • Conduct in-depth legal and business research to support lawyers, students and staff;
  • Participate in collection development by recommending and evaluating print and electronic resources to be added or withdrawn from the collection;
  • Track legislative, case law and industry developments;
  • Provide assistance and guidance in the use of the libraries’ collection, website, online catalogues and external databases;
  • Supports communications activities that utilize the intranet and other internal communications tools in building firm engagement;
  • Perform current awareness monitoring, analyzing the results and provide information to lawyers;
  • Other duties as required.

Education & Qualifications:

  • Formal Library education , or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • 2-3 years of experience providing research and reference in a law firm or corporate environment. Law firm experience is strongly preferred;
  • Possess strong time management skills;
  • Be described as energetic and have the ability to work under pressure;
  • Intermediate to advanced research skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively;
  • Flexible, open and energetic team player;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Required Skills & Personality Traits for Success:

  • Ability to prepare reports, executive summaries, and other correspondence necessary to communicate research results to all levels of management;
  • Proficiency with legal titles, legal research resources, library technologies, including software and products used for communication, research and knowledge sharing;
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail, excellent problem-solving and communication skills, as well as a strong client focus;
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and a customer-service orientation are essential;
  • Knowledge of library and information science principles, practices, procedures and trends.
